More information : A possible Roman burial was found by a workman 5ft deep, by the side of a spring about 1/4 mile from the present channel of the river Roden at Theydon Mount (Garnon) (TQ 47359786), "there being a hollow and a mound contiguous to the spring". The objects comprised a cylindrical lead cist with cover, 15 ins. high and 7 ins. in diameter, a bronze ewer, a Samian cup, and indented beaker, a globular bottle and fragments of several black platters. They were exhibited to the Society of Antiquities by W.B.Smith in 1863. (1-2)
Excavations by R. Brooks in 1967-8 centred TL 474978 uncovered the site of a 3rd-4th century Roman villa. Only a small section of the building was excavated and a report on the site and the finds is due to be published next year (1976/7) in the Essex Journal. The site of the Roman burial was not confirmed. (3)
