Summary : Mainly 15th Century church, but documented as dedicated to St Paulinus in 1259. Two monks from Hailes Abbey in the early 13th century were sent to Paul and Breage to serve the churches there and act as agents. The church was gutted by a Spanish force on 23-July-1595. West tower, nave and chancel in one (no chancel arch), full length aisles with nine-bay arcades, south porch. 15th century tower, porch, parts of nave arcade. The rest rebuilt circa 1595-1600. Restored by J.D. Sedding, 1875. In the churchyard is a memorial, dated 1778, to the last person to speak Cornish. |

The church of St Paul de Lion (3) dedicated to St Paulinus in 1259 and given by Richard, Earl of Cornwall to the Cistercian Abbey of Hayles in Gloucester (4,5), was burnt by the Spaniards in 1595. The existing building is mainly 15th century, comprising a nave, chancel, N and S aisles, W tower and S porch. (3-5)
In the churchyard is memorial over the grave of Dolly Pentreath, 1778, who posed as the last person to speak Cornish.

C15 north and south aisles with arcades of 7 bays, octagonal piers and double-chamfered arches. Gutted by Spaniards 23 July 1595. |
