More information : [SW 4653 2702] Stone Cross [T.I.] (Remains of) [T.I.] (1) A cross stands against the vicarage hedge at Paul, 'a short distance beyond the church, and on the left hand side of the road leading to Mousehole. The base is built into the hedge on end, nearly opposite to the cross. 'Only one face of the stone is visible. The two horizontal limbs of the cross upon it are of equal width; the upper one is expanded at the top, and the shaft is gradually contracted by the sloping together of its sides. [See AO/59/347/4.] (2) 'Visited 10.11.1943. This cross now stands on the roadside near the drive entrance to the Vicarage. Formerly the base stood on end in the hedge, almost opposite, on the other side of the road; and the shaft lay near the roadside in the southern side of the junction of Green Lane with the road from Paul to Mousehole. Mrs. Beckerlegge's father often walked over it. Its position, where carts went over it, helps to account for the chipping about the head. 'Front: A Latin cross in relief. Back: A raised cross with expanding limbs. Ht. 363/4". (3) The cross is as described by Beckerlegge and is correctly positioned on the OS 25". Ground photograph AO/60/303/8 from the south. (4) (SW 46532703) Cross (NR) (5) A wheelhead cross set in its own base. (6) It was found built into the wall on the opposite side of the road and dug out in 1878, being placed in the position seen by Langdon. The base was removed from the wall at the end of the 19th century and the cross mounted in it at its present position. The original site and history are not known.
