Monument Number 422260

Hob Uid: 422260
Location :
Cornwall
Sancreed
Grid Ref : SW4090029010
Summary : An oval enclosure bounded by a bank of earth and stone, with an outer ditch to the west and north. The entrance would appear to have been on the north side and is blocked by modern walling. Almost opposite this entrance on the south east side of the enclosure is another gap, but it is not clear if this was an original entrance or a later mutilation. In the centre is a very low circular platform, but it is too slight to identify as a hut. The feature has been interpreted as a settlement or stock enclosure with a central barrow or hut circle.
More information : [SW 4090 2901] Enclosure - ? small pound or ? henge.
Hut inside. (1)

The roughly pear-shaped enclosure is bounded by a bank of earth
and stone, with an outer ditch to the west and north. The entrance
would appear to have been on the north side and is blocked by
modern walling. Almost opposite this entrance on the south east
side of the enclosure is another gap, but it is not clear if this
was an original entrance or a later mutilation.
In the centre of the enclosure is a very low circular platform,
but it is too slight to identify as a hut.
The purpose of the enclosure is not known but it is most unlikely
to have been a henge.
A 25 inch survey has been made. (2)

(SW 40852900) Enclosure (NR) (3)

An irregular oval enclosure listed under Rounds, with a barrow
inside consisting of a mound with part of a retaining wall. (4)

Scheduled under Rounds.(5)

80' diameter east-west by 100' diameter north-south. Rampart of
rubble averaging 2' high internally and externally. Much cattle
damage. The ditch is visible as a shallow depression beside the
north-west rampart. There is a terrace to the west c 20' from the
rampart which curves around the south too - ? second rampart.
A barrow (Russell No 27) is inside. (6)

SW40902901. This small round-like enclosure is situated on a
gentle east-facing slope in improved and cultivated land
approximately 150m E. of Caer Bran. The rampart, constructed of
earth and stone, is disturbed and densely overgrown, and although
the ditches to the north and west are clearly defined the alleged
features to the south and further west (6) are not evident in
standing crop.
The interior which has been ploughed and also damaged by livestock
measured 33m E-W by 40m transversely. The turf-covered mound or
platform near the centre is now a low amorphous spread of soil
approximately 10.9m across and 0.4m high; no surface stone is
evident. In its present state this mound cannot be positively
identified either as a hut circle (2) or as Russell suggests a
barrow. There seems little doubt however that the enclosure is
a small 'pound' and the possibility of a henge can be dismissed.
Published 1/2500 survey correct. (7)
