Summary : A parish church with possible Norman origins as it contains a Norman font and a reset Norman doorway within the north wall. The tower is late 14th-early 15th century in date but the rest of the church was largely rebuilt in a restoration of 1881-91 by JD Sedding. Originally probably a cruciform church but extended and remodelled in the 15th century. Nave/chancel under one roof; north transept, circa late 14th century west tower,with external stair turret against the north wall. 15th century south aisle (probably largely rebuilt 1881-91), with canted rood stair projection, and 15th century south porch. |
More information : [SW 4235 2902] Sancreed Church [TU] (1) Sancreed Church - Dedication: ST. Sancredus. 'Circa 1150 it was given to Tewkesbury Abbey.....The church is mainly 15th C. but the large number of Celtic crosses surrounding it (now mostly collected in the churchyard) point to its early importance'. (2) The church is in regular use for Divine worship.(3) The parish church of St Crida has a 14th century W tower but the 15th century body of the church was much restored in 1891. Not graded. (4) Sancreed is listed as the site of a lan on the evidence of two inscribed crosses in the churchyard (see SW 42 NW 17 and 18). (5) The well preserved church is in regular use.
