Hob Uid: 423122
Location :
Cornwall
St. Ives
Grid Ref : SW4984038740
Summary : Medieval dovecote
More information : [SW 49843874] Culver House (NAT) (1)

The Culver House situated in the valley below Rosewall Hill at
Bussow in Towednack is built of granite, the stones being fitted
together without mortar. The domed roof is built in the true
beehive manner. Several holes in the wall about 5 ft. above the
ground admitted the pigeons.
Although primitive in appearance, "there can be no doubt the
'Culver House' was built for pigeonsin the Middle Ages, perhaps
in the thirteenth century". (2)

"Culver House, Bussow. A medieval dovecot, circular and squat,
with conical stone roof; isolated in a field. (a) (3)

The Culver House at Higher Bussow, Towednack, is scheduled as an
ancient monument. (4)

The circular dovecot is 6.0m. in overall diameter, with mortared
rubble walls 1.3m. thick.
The structure may well be mediaeval, and though not readily
dateable, Henderson's 13th century date seems remarkably early.
