More information : [SW 49843874] Culver House (NAT) (1) The Culver House situated in the valley below Rosewall Hill at Bussow in Towednack is built of granite, the stones being fitted together without mortar. The domed roof is built in the true beehive manner. Several holes in the wall about 5 ft. above the ground admitted the pigeons. Although primitive in appearance, "there can be no doubt the 'Culver House' was built for pigeonsin the Middle Ages, perhaps in the thirteenth century". (2) "Culver House, Bussow. A medieval dovecot, circular and squat, with conical stone roof; isolated in a field. (a) (3) The Culver House at Higher Bussow, Towednack, is scheduled as an ancient monument. (4) The circular dovecot is 6.0m. in overall diameter, with mortared rubble walls 1.3m. thick. The structure may well be mediaeval, and though not readily dateable, Henderson's 13th century date seems remarkably early. Ground photograph: see O/61/21/1, from the NW. A 25" survey has been made.
