Monument Number 423611

Hob Uid: 423611
Location :
Cornwall
Zennor
Grid Ref : SW4376036600
Summary : Two mounds investigated in 1934; one is thought to be part of a courtyard house, the other a possible fogou. Traces of a field system are visible south of the mounds.
More information : 'East Bospothennis [Zennor]

There are two large mounds on this site which seem to be composed of early debris, on the side of one of which trial digging by Dr. W.A. Roach and the writer in 1934 revealed part of the side room for a Courtyard House. In addition the area is marked by heavy accumulations of weathered stone in field walls.' (1)

A 25" survey has been made of the two mounds mentioned by Authy 1, which are at SW 43733670 and SW 43753670.

Neither mound is now recognisable as part of a courtyard house. The western mound 1.6m high, is composed of earth and stones and overgrown by grass.

The eastern mound is irregular in shape, 1.0m maximum height and also grass covered. There are fragments of dry stone walling visible in places. A very wide modern field wall abuts onto the west side of the mound.

There are ploughed down terraces visible in the fields to the south of the mounds, centred at SW 43793660 (2)

Hirst excavated the eastern mound at SW 43753670. (3)

No change from survey of 6 2 61.

Both mounds remain and would seem to have been parts of a single courtyard house, but are now almost unintelligible and simply represent the site. (4)

Courtyard House (NR) (5)

Two mounds examined in 1934; one at SW 43753668 is thought to be part of a courtyard house, the other, SW 43723671, a fogou. (6-7)
