More information : A hoard of about 10,000 silver coins of English Northumbrian (Danish), continental, and oriental mints and nearly 1,000 ozs. of silver ingots and scrap metal were found in a leaden chest near a ford across the Ribble two miles above Preston, at Cuerdale, Lancashire. Mr. W.J. Andrew has suggested that this was the treasure chest of the Danish host that was overtaken in its retreat to Northumbria in 911 and destroyed at the ford, the date agreeing with that deduced from the coins. The silver ornaments are in the British Museum. A small stone pillar bearing upon the N.E. face "Site of Cuerdale Hoard 15 May 1840", stands in a pasture field upon the south bank of the River Ribble, 360.0m to the west of Cuerdale Hall. (3)
