Chi-Rho Stone

Hob Uid: 424661
Location :
Cornwall
Hayle
Grid Ref : SW5653638415
Summary : Stone inscribed with Chi-Rho, probably late 4th - early 5th century, built into the south porch of Phillack church. It was possibly found during restoration of the church in 1856 although it has been suggested that it is part of a tombstone found at Carsnew. It certainly indicates the presence of Christian community in the Hayle area in the late Roman or early sub-Roman period.
More information : In the gable of the S. porch of Phillack church is a
stone with a Chi-Rho monogram of early type, commonest in the
4th century. (1)

The form of the monogram is not later than the early 5th
century and seems to point to the presence of a Christian
community in the Hayle area as early as 350 to 450 A.D. (2)

A small stone, approximately 9 ins. by 5 ins., with a circular
boss incorporating the monogram, at SW 5653 3841, in the gable
wall.(3)

The Chi-Rho inscised stone was presumably recovered during a
rebuilding of the church in 1856. Wall is of the opinion that
it originally formed part of the early Christian tombstone
found at Carsnew (see SW 53 NE 16)

Clare suggests a 6th century date for the carving, though the basis for this dating is unclear. (4)

The stone was seen during field investigation in 1997. (5)

Noted. No further action. (6-8)

On the continent, this stone is dateable to the 4th-5th centuries, so is probably 5th century here. (9)
