More information : SW 551313. A 4 ft 2 inches high stone stands in the churchyard of St Hilary`s Church, close to the south entrance gate on the west side of the path. Baird suggests that the stone might be a badly mutilated wheel- head and shaft, or a cross slab. He notes that there are traces of a cross in relief on the front, but he could not see the back. Henderson suggests that it was probably a lych stone, or the lid of a stone coffin-owing to its thickness. Nothing is known of its history. (1-2) The stone, which stands at SW 5503 3127, is 1.3 metres high, 0.4 metres wide and 0.15 metres thick. It has a latin cross in relief which continues down its whole length on one face, and nothing on the visible part of the reverse face. It is probably either a cross slab or a stone coffin lid. (3)
