Summary : A late second century winged corridor Roman villa was discovered in Chapel Field, Magnor Farm. The villa building continued until fourth century. A Roman coin hoard was also found. In 1985 geophysical surveying revealed a double ditched circular enclosure of possibly Iron age date. Medieval walling and tiles have also been found.
More information : [SW 63684237] Roman Villa [GS] (Site of) [Not shown on other OS publications up to 1963] (1) A small, winged-corridor Roman villa in Chapel Field. Magor Farm, near Camborne was excavated in 1931 and 1932. Three periods of construction were identified - initial construction in the second half of the 2nd c.,A.D., enlargement at an uncertain date and abandonment, dated by a hoard of denarii c. 230-40 A.D. The building was re-occupied by squatters c.270-80 A.D. Medieval walling and tiles were also found. The villa was probably built by a Romanised native and only the 'squatter' phase may be associated with tin-mining. [Site-plan, plans, finds listed, etc.] (2) Additional accounts. (3-4). A slight depression about 25 metres by 10 metres is visible under pasture at approximately SW 63674235. This corresponds with the farmers description of the villa site, but permission could not be obtained to enter the field. Consequently the siting is accurate to about 10 metres. (5) A geophysical survey carried out in the mid 1980s identified a series of ditched enclosures within the vicinity of the villa. (6)
