Summary : The church of St Goran is mentioned as holding land in 1083 which is evidence for its monastic character in Celtic times. St Goran was a contemporary of St Petrock in the 6th century. The monastery appears to have been extant in 1083. In 1269 the church and its lands were given to the new college of Glasney (SW73SE5). The present building is an original Norman cruciform church enlarged in the 15th century. There is a late 15th century square tower. Some remains of the Norman church are incorporated in the 15th century nave and chancel; the north doorway and south transept are 13th century. Restored 1876-80. |
