Summary : Railway engine sheds, built in the late 1870s for the Cornwall Mineral Railway. They are constructed from red brick with some dry slate roofs, most now having been replaced with corrugated asbestos and some felted; the fanned engine sheds have roofs behind moulded brick parapets and most of the other roofs have moulded brick eaves. The complex comprises a fan-shaped plan of nine engine sheds radiating so as to align with a turntable. They are mostly single storey but there is a two storey administration block to the centre of the main workshop range. This complex is a virtually unaltered example of an industrial railway terminus with good attention to architectural detail, one of only three planned groups of this type in the country. |
More information : (SX 07325370) Engine House (NAT) (1) Railway depot and works of the Cornwall Mineral Railway built by Sir Morton Peto in 1872. The main shed, of red brick, is eleven bays long, each separated by flat brick buttresses with metal frame windows. Similar but lower adjoining sheds radiate from the engine turntable. The building includes engineering shops and offices and is still partly used by British Rail. (2-3)
