Longstone

Hob Uid: 431794
Location :
Cornwall
St. Mabyn
Grid Ref : SX0600073300
Summary : Standing stone
More information : The "Longstone" was formerly situated at the
intersection of the roads to which it gave its name. It stood
in a field until with the erection of cottages it was enclosed
by one of the gardens. An object of much awe and superstition
and said to have been inscribed, it was removed a few years ago
to Treblethick when it was broken up or used to cover a well,
(Longstone SX 060733). (1)

The site of the "Longstone" is not known locally and there are
no traces of it at Treblethick where Lake says it was split and
used for gateposts. Almost certainly a standing stone which, if
Maclean's information was correct, could be placed in a
Sub-Roman category. It should not, on the information
available, be confused with the medieval cross in the vicinity.
(SX 07 SE 25). (2)
