Place House, which came into the possession of the Treffry family in the time of Richard I, was defended against the French in 1457, and was largely rebuilt and fortified soon afterwards. The present mansion is mainly early 16th century extensively restored by Joseph Thomas Treffry circa 1817-1845. The east front dates from 1791, and the large west tower replaces the tower mentioned by Leland which collapsed in the 18th century. (2-5)
