The Blockhouse at the Garden Battery is a two storeyed square granite tower with ruined battlements, small gun ports and a four centred arched doorway (HHR Grade 2). It is mentioned in Carew`s History of Cornwall, 1602, and is depicted as a defensive work and described `Blockhouse` on a map of the siege of Plymouth dated 1643.
A now barely legible inscription on the east wall records Carew`s remarks and the later history of the site up to 1800 when larger guns were installed (see SX 45 SE 31 ). (2-5)
