Summary : A linear group of nine round barrows plus three small mounds set on a similar alignment are situated on high ground with impressive vistas in every direction. The barrows lie in close-cropped moorland turf and little surface store is evident. Their average diameter is 9.6m and 0.5m high. The majority are round barrows with flat tops although one ring barrow survives. Most have been superficially disturbed.

A group of round barrows or cairns on Gownhill Down, 9 listed by Grinsell as follows:-
'A' at SX 57185988, a cairn 8.0m. in diameter and 0.5m. high.

'B' at SX 57185985, perhaps a gutted cairn 8.0m. in diameter and 0.2m. high.

'C' at SX 57195983, a cairn 8.0m. in diameter and 0.3m. high.

'D' at SX 57205982, a probable cairn 8.0m. in diameter and 0.1m. high.

'E' at SX 57205981, a truncated cairn 9.0m. in diameter and 0.3m. high.

'F' at SX 57205978, a cairn 13.5m. in diameter and 1.0m. high.

'G' at SX 57245977, a probable cairn 11.5m. in diameter and 0.2m. high.

'H' at SX 57225974, a cairn or barrow 9.0m. in diameter and 0.2m. high.

'I' at SX 57215972, a carin or barrow 9.0m. in diameter and 0.3m. high.

A further barrow is listed by Edwards and included in the scheduled list, this is:-
'J' at SX 57155993 a cairn 9.5m. in diameter and 0.3m. high.

Edwards list differs from Grinsell's in Grid references and some of the cairn or barrow dimensions. (2-4)

During a resurvey of this area in 1980 a total of twelve barrows were recorded as belonging to this group. (5)

A linear group of nine round barrows situated on high ground which has impressive vistas in every direction. The barrows lie under close-cropped moorland turf and little surface store is evident.

SX57185993 A ring barrow or cairn 11.7m by 10.9m across with an outer bank 0.5m high externally and 0.3m high internally. There is no surface trace of an outer ditch or kerb.

SX57195987 A round barrow 9.6m high by 9.0m across and up to 0.7m high.

Two conjoined round barrows.

SX57195984. This disturbed round barrow has a large oval pit dug into its centre. The mound is 8.9m by 8.0m across and the pit is 5.1m by 4.2m. The mound is 0.6m high, the pit 1.0m deep. A distinct but low spoil spread which lies against the north side of the mound is 1.2m across and 0.3m high.

SX57195983. A round barrow 9.8m by 9.2m and 0.7m high. A 1.0m wide flattish edge to the mound could be the remains of a berm.

SX57205982. A round barrow 9.2m by 8.4m and 0.3m high; slightly disturbed.

SX57205980. A round barrow 12.4m by 10.4m with a maximum height of 0.5m.

SX57205978. A damaged round barrow 16.0m in diameter and with an average height of 0.8m. Part of the southern side has been cut back.

SX57235977. A flat topped or platform barrow 13.5m in diameter and 0.4m high.

SX57235974. A flat topped or platform barrow 9.5m in diameter and 0.4m high. It is being damaged on the west side by a horse riding trail.

SX57235972. A round barrow 9.6m in diameter and 0.5m high with a disturbed top and damage to its fringe.

Three small mounds lie off the summit area but more or less on the line of the main barrow group.

SX57175996. A turf-covered mound 3.8m by 2.4m and 0.3m high.

SX57175998. A turf-covered mound 2.8m by 2.3m and 0.3m high. with a slight depression to the SW.

SX57175999. A turf-covered mound 4.5m by 2.1m and 0.3m high.
Two of these slight features were noted as possible barrows in 1980 by Greeves. (6)
