Monument Number 438671

Hob Uid: 438671
Location :
Devon
West Devon
Sheepstor
Grid Ref : SX5638066010
Summary : A stone row and cairn circle. The cairn circle measures approximately 12.6m in diameter and has eleven stones. The disturbed central cairn is 9.5m in diameter and 0.4m high. The row, double in part, extends 356m north from the cairn circle to one stone beyond Worth's small menhir. None of the slab or pillar-shaped stones exceed 1.0m. in height, the majority being quite small and just protruding from the turf with many stones apparently missing. Consequently there is no observable regular spacing between the stones.
More information : (SX 563660) Stone Row (NR)
(SX 56336580) Cairn Circle (NR) (Restored) (NAT) (1)

A stone row, 1740 feet long, mainly single but double in parts.
At its southern end is a cairn circle with a diameter of 40ft.
6ins. In 1909 the circle was restored and five of the present
stones were introduced from elsewhere. Prior to restoration one
stone was standing, four had fallen and the presumed sites of
six other stones were represented by pits (Plan). A 4ft long
fallen stone terminated the stone row at its norther end. (2-4)

The reports (2) and (3) were amended by Worth in 1948 (4) when
he described the features as a retaining circle at the southern
end and a small menhir at the northern end, and stated that the
length of the row formerly given was incorrect. Cairn Circle. (5)

On a west facing slope of Ringmoor Down at 293m. OD. is a stone
row at the higher southern end of which is a cairn surrounded by
a restored circle of stones.

The cairn circle measures approximately 12.6m. in diameter and
has eleven stones averaging 0.7m. high (see ground photograph).
The disturbed central cairn is 9.5m. in diameter and 0.4m. in
height.

The row, double in part, extends 356m. north from the cairn
circle to one stone beyond Worth's small menhir. None of the
slab or pillar-shaped stones exceed 1.0m. in height, the
majority being quite small and just protruding from the turf
with many stones apparently missing. Consequently there is no
observable regular spacing between the stones. The nearby
longhouse settlements (SX 56 NE 118 and 121) and their
associated field banks no doubt partly account for the robbing of
the row.

Surveyed at 1:10 000 and at 1:000 for AO records. (6)

The perimeter circle has been re-surveyed by prof Thom.
(See illus card 5) (7)

These features remain as described by Authority 6.
The stone circle is somewhat unusual for Dartmoor and may be an affectation those carrying out the reconstruction. (8)
