More information : (SX 58676350) Chambered Hut (NR). (1) A chambered cairn, 440 yards to the south-east of the 'Hanging Stone'. (It was previously considered to be a chambered hut, by R N Worth). (2-3) Wrecked cairn, in a hollow, 70-80 feet in diameter by 4 feet. (4) SX 58666349: This cairn lies on a well drained south west facing slope at 325m. above OD. It is slightly irregular in plan, being on average 22.5m. in diameter and from 0.6m. high on the upper side to 1.8m. high on the lower side. The centre is much disturbed, with many hollows, up to 1.0m. deep, which have been interpreted as chambers by R. N. Worth (see authority 3) but are most probably modern windbreak shelters. 1:10 000 Survey on PFD. (5)
A round cairn measuring 26 metres by 24 metres and standing up to 1.2 metres high. This cairn was investigated by Worth during the 19th century and a number of stone lined chambers were revealed. In recent years, the mound has been interpreted as a chambered cairn but it is more likely that it represents a large cairn into which later shelters have been inserted. Immediately next to the north western edge of the mound are 2 small satellite cairns, both measuring 2.5 metres in diameter and up to 0.15 metre high. Scheduled. (6) |
