Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 439771

Hob Uid: 439771
Location :
Devon
West Devon
Peter Tavy
Grid Ref : SX5444077670
Summary : Ring Cairn on the western slopes of the Roos Tor - Langstone Ridge.
More information : The small stones which accumulated during the clearing of the nearby
modern enclosures were probably deposited here. (2)

(SX 54447767) Hut Circle (NR). (4-5)

This feature is not a hut circle but probably a much-robbed cairn,
though it could just possibly be a clearance mound, the adjacent
hillside having been completely cleared of stones. It has a uniform
diameter of 17.0m, and its height is 0.5m. It consists of scattered
small to medium-sized stones.

Surveyed at 1:10 000 on PFD.

See ground photograph. (6-7)

SX 5444 7767. The remains of what must have been an impressive large cairn lie on a fairly steep north-west facing hillslope in virtually clitter-free open moorland. It measures 17.0m in overall diameter, 0.5m in height and is apparently composed entirely of small stones.

The centre of the mound has been robbed to some extent but its turf-covered rim, which has a slope length of about 1.2m and a height of 0.5m, is more or less intact; its inner side drops almost vertically for 0.3m into the fairly flat diturbed centre. There are no apparent traces of a kerb or cist.

Grinsells number 34a.

A 4.0m wide, c.10.0m long band of small stones lies c.50m to the north of the cairn adjacent to a gateway in the newtake wall. The material is very similar to that evident in the surviving part of the cairn and so it could be some of the robbed stone which was perhaps intended for, but never used in, the construction of the field wall.
It is not unreasonable to conclude that Mr Bellamy (2) was refering to this spread of stone rather than the cairn. (8)

Resurveyed at 1:200 scale October 2003 (9) (10)

As decribed by Authority 8. Condition is unchanged (11)
