Monument Number 439803

Hob Uid: 439803
Location :
Devon
West Devon
Peter Tavy
Grid Ref : SX5486077650
Summary : Two prehistoric round cairns of probable Bronze Age date. Neither cairn could be located during the field investigation of 1993.
More information : (SX 54847764 and 54887766) Two barrows here have not been
surveyed yet. (1)

Tumuli. In position as shown on field sheet and record sheet.
A Cairn. Approx diameter 8 metres 0.3m high. Heather covered. Slight hollow in centre. Situated at SX54857761.
B Remains of visible cairn. Approx diameter 5 metres, approx 0.1m high. Hollow in centre showing stone core. Situated at SX54887763. (2)

Tumulus (NR) (Applied to two mounds shown). (3)

Two small barrows only one of which was examined. This was 34 feet in
diameter and had been robbed for wall building leaving the base
intact. Cremated remains, ashes and charcoal, were found in a pit 12
inches in diameter and 10 inches deep covered by a flat slab 24
inches by 15 inches. The barrow had been constructed with stones
leaning on this cover stone. (4)

SX 54847764. A probable cairn of diameter 10.0m and height 0.6m with
a stone core.

SX 54887766. A possible cairn of diameter 5.0m and height 0.3m with a
few stones at its centre.

There are no traces of any other cairns in this area.

Surveyed at 1:10 000 on PFD. (5)

(Centred SX 54867765) Cairns (NR). (6)

SX 553783. Two round barrows on Peter Tavy Great Common, scheduled.
(see Illus card).
(The grid reference quoted by Authority 6 is inaccurate. By
examination of Authority 7, and OS 1:10000 1982 the site can be
located at SX 54867765). (7-8)

(A) SX54847764 A flat topped stony mound, probably a cairn, about 12m E-W by 11m transversely and of 0.6m maximum height. There is no apparent kerb and the edges are ill-defined. It is predominantly turf-covered but a small area of stones is exposed in the NW quadrant presumably the site of the 1899 excavation.

(B) SX54887765 Located 45m ENE of 'A' or probable cairn visible as a turf covered mound about 5m in diameter and 0.3m high. No kerb is evident and the centre has been disturbed.
The mounds are both quite prominently situated on the summit of a gently domed ridge of rough grassland which is generally devoid of surface stone. (9)

Resurveyed at 1:2500 using GPS September 2003 (10)

Condition is stable (11)
