Monument Number 439891

Hob Uid: 439891
Location :
Devon
West Devon
Peter Tavy
Grid Ref : SX5300076100
Summary : Stone rows, stone circles, cairns, (alleged).
More information : Traces remain of the former existence of one or more
stone rows on the summit of Cock's Tor (SX 53077618). (1)

Two small stone circles, each of two rings of stones, one of which
had a row of low stones leading from it, were found due to shrinkage
of soil under drought conditions on Cox Tor (SX 530761). The latter,
with circles of 8 feet and 16 feet diameter enclosed a small cairn or
the remains of a cist. The other had circles of 7 feet and 11 feet
diameter. (2)

"The summit of the tor is fairly level ... at its northern end are
two cairns and the remains of a stone row". (Not listed by Grinsell
in his correlation of rows and cairns in Devon Arch Soc. 36). (3)

Worths article (2) can be interpreted in more than one way. He refers
to:-

a. A cairn or possible cist with two circles of stone round it, 8ft
and 16ft. in diameter, with traces of a stone row, its direction the
same as than on Launceston Moor (SX 550787; north to south).

b. Circles 7ft and 11ft in diameter. (It it not clear whether this is
one or two sites).

c. Two larger circles 24ft across, one enclosing the remains of a
cairn.

It would seen that there are at least four seperate structures and
possibly five although some must refer to the existing ring cairns
(SX 57 NW 35, 36 etc) none can be satisfactorily related. The area is
approximately SX 530764.

R.N. Worth mentions, like Crossing, one stone row, while R.H. Worth
notes one or more rows. These cannot be traced, and the depth of peat
on the grassy plateau is so little that if the row/rows were obvious
with slight shrinkage they should still be reasonably visible. Spaced
stones abound, particularly towards the northern end and numerous
fictitious rows of four of five stones can be deduced but nothing
acceptable from any of the cairns. (4)

No trace of any of these features is visible. The spaced stones observed by Authority 4 could well have been considered archaeological. They appear to be set on end, and protrude through the turf to a height of 15 to 20cms. They are, however, entirely natural.

Depicted on the RCHME Cox Tor Survey (1/2500 scale). (5)

Not visible during field investigation in 1992. (6)
