Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 440085

Hob Uid: 440085
Location :
Devon
West Devon
Walkhampton
Grid Ref : SX5808071290
Summary : BA cairn, turf -covered and measuring 6.6m in diameter and 0.8m high. It is neatly trenched across the top.
More information : (SX 58087129) Cairn (NR). (1)

A barrow, 45 ft diameter, with a central cist, 4 ft x 2 ft 4 ins.
Examination in 1899 revealed that it had been previously rifled,
but a small piece (1 1/2 ins x 3/4 in) of corroded bronze was
found. (2-3)

The published cairn is on a slight west slope at 370m above sea
level and comprises a turf covered mound of stones 5.0m in
diameter with no visible kerb. It is 0.6m high on the west side
and 0.3m high on the east.
There is a very slight hollow in the centre which seems too
small to be the result of serious excavation. Although it is
a cairn it does not seem to be that recorded by Burnard for this
situation although it may be the one which had been 'previously
disturbed', (SX 57 SE 22).

Surveyed at 1:10 000 PFD. (4)

The cairn could not be located during field investigation. (5)

A heather covered cairn a little over 200m from its neighbour (SX 57 SE 22). It measures 6.6m in daimeter and 0.8m high and is neatly trenched from the edge to the centre although apparently not by Burnard. (6).

A cairn set low down on the rim of a dry valley but with distant views of the many surrounding granite tor summits. The trench is cut across the top of the mound which is under moorland turf. Surveyed at 1:2500 scale (7)
