Monument Number 440693

Hob Uid: 440693
Location :
Devon
West Devon
Lydford
Grid Ref : SX5235084680
Summary : The earthwork remains of a post medieval clearance cairn.
More information : (SX 52358468) Mound (NAT). (1)

A cairn 7.0m. in diameter by 0.2m. high, visited 6 August 1976. (2)

The mound depicted on the OS 1:10000 scale mapping (1) and described by Grinsell (2) is largely obscured by gorse. It is not of prehistoric origin as it sits upon a number of narrow cultivation ridges associated with the post medieval field system in this area. It is more likely to be a relatively recent stone clearance heap. A similar feature (440692) lies 140m to the east.
