Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 441173

Hob Uid: 441173
Location :
Devon
South Hams
Harford, Ugborough
Grid Ref : SX6559058750
Summary : Bell barrow
More information : (SX 65595875) Cairn (NR) (1)

The northernmost of several cairns near the summit of Butterdon
Hill lies approximately 200 feet south-south-east (sic) from the
retaining circle at the end of the stone row (SX 65 NE 17). There
are clear remains of a marginal wall on the eastern circumference
of this cairn; whether it is an original feature is not known but
there is no apparent reason why it should have been added later.(2)

A large cairn, 27 metres in diameter, 3.3 metres high. The barrow
has an apparent berm, but this may not have been an original
characteristic. Fair condition.(3)

SX 65595875. Apparently a bell barrow; 28 metres in diameter by
3.0 metres high, with a berm raised about 1.0 metre above the
surroundings, and no ditch, the digging of which would have been
impracticable on Dartmoor.
The possibility that the berm might be caused by 18/19th century
landscaping seems exceedingly remote in such a situation.
Visited by Grinsell, June 1973.(4)(5)
Triple crown of BA cairns on Butterdon Hill (see also SX 65 NE 27,28)
obviously important burial sites.(6)
SX 656587: Cairn/tumulus, scheduled.(7)
