Summary : The Benedictine alien priory of St George at Modbury was established circa 1140. It was still extant in 1430 and was granted to Eton College by Edward VI, and reverted to Tavistock Abbey circa 1461-7, although that never took effect. |
More information : [SX 65535152]. Site of PRIORY [NR] (Benedictine). (1) An alien priory at Modbury was established c.1140 and suppressed c.1414. In 1467 Modbury was granted to Tavistock Abbey as a cell. (2) There is considerable doubt regarding the site of the priory. Leland reported that the remains were visible on the north side of the church, an unpublished memorandum written in 1795 by John Andrews says that the site was at "Scotland" adjoining the higher side of the churchyard. The Tithe Map shows Scott's Garden and Scott's Field to the N. of the church. Notes by J.F.Williams state that foundations were discovered in 1911 and are now within the churchyard. (3) The register of Bishop Grandisson for 1336 contains circumstantial evidence for the Priory having been sited immediately north of the churchyard. (4) |
