Monument Number 442484

Hob Uid: 442484
Location :
Grid Ref : SX6998079060
Summary : A circular mound measuring 13.5 by 13.2 metres has been interpreted as a possible barrow or cairn. Alternatively it may represent the remains of field clearance.
More information : (SX 69987905) A large mound of stones. (1)

SX 69987906. On the steep western flanks of Hamel Down are traces of field banks and a heather-covered bowl barrow or possibly a turf-grown cairn. This area is covered with numerous tiny cairns protruding above thick heather. (2)

SX 6998 7907. A circular mound situated on the moderate W slope of Hameldown.

The mound, covered in heather, wortleberry and bracken, measures 13.5 N-S by 13.2m and stands highest on the W arc at 1-1.3m; the E arc is lower, between 0.5 and 0.9m. It has a flattish top 7.3m across with slight disturbance caused by burrowing animals. It appears to be composed of small stones and earth.

Two minor, tongue-shaped 'trenches' are cut into the NW and SE sides respectively: their purpose is obscure but not determined enough to cause major damage.

It lies within an abandoned field (see SX 67 NE 111) and may be connected with field clearance. However its regulrity and size, if not its position (although it does command extensive views from SW through W to N) are more convincing as a prehistoric burial mound.

Visible on APs. (3)

Surveyed at 1:2500, with SX 67 NE 111. (4)
