Hob Uid: 442513
Location :

Grid Ref : SX6391079670
Summary : Cairn and cist (rems)
More information : [SX 63927967] Cist [NR] (1)

A cist, with internal measurements of 6ft 6in x 3ft 9in, at Roundy
Park, Postbridge. (2)

On the north west of and just outside the enclosure (SX 67 NW 1)
is a cairn with a well-preserved cist orientated south
south-west-north north-east. The cairn has an average diameter of
5.5m, being not quite circular, and a height of 0.6m, with the
remains of a peristalith incorporating prominent orthostats. The
cist measures internally 2.0m x 1.2m. with a depth of 0.7m. The
two remaining cover-stones measure 1.4m. x 1.3m and 10.m x 0.8m.
respectively.

Surveyed at 1:10 000 on PFD. (3)

[SX 63917966] Cairn [NR] (4)

The cist at Roundy Park was discovered in August 1893 by Robert
Burnard, who was responsible for the restoration of the grave. (5)(6)The cist "consists of nine stones, unlike any other kist on Dartmoor,
and megalithic influence is clear". (6)
Additional bibliography. (7)

SX 639797. Roundy Park, cist north of Chittafford Down, scheduled.
(8 - 9)

Centred at SX 63917966 on gentle NE facing slopes about 365m OD overlooking the East Dart River is a cairn measuring about 5.2m N-S by 4.2m with an irregular kerb of large contiguous stones.
Set slightly to the SW of the centre is a cist supposedly one of the largest on Dartmoor. When found by Burnard (10) in 1893 both and stones were in place and three side stones. Two side stones were prostrate, one in the cist the other outside. One cover stone had fallen in the cist whilst the other was a short distance from the cairn.
Excavation of the cist yielded two fragments of flint possibly an arrow point and a scraper. There was also some charcoal from bone. Trigging the SW stone was a slightly fired `cooking stone'. Burnard resurrected the dislodgedstones before making his plan, which conforms to its present state. The cist of 7 side slabs and 2 cover slabs measures internally 2.2m NE-SW by 1.2m and is 0.8m deep. Worth (2) states that this cist had been restored `much too generously' even before Burnard (9) found it so it may not be the original size. there is some small stone content about 0.4m high probably original between the kerb stones and the cist.
The SW side of the cairn is overlaid by the tumble of a prehistoric enclosure wall its face clearly avoiding the kerb (11).
