Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 443244

Hob Uid: 443244
Location :
Devon
West Devon
Dartmoor Forest
Grid Ref : SX6114307448
Summary : Cairn and stone alignment
More information : Cist (rems. of)

"One hundred yards NE of the hilltop are the remains of another kist
about 4 feet by 2 feet 6 inches, long axis NW by N and SE by S. The south-east endstone lies prone, the opposite end is erect, and the side stones are absent. The cornerstone, which is very massive measures 4 feet 6 inches by 4 feet and lies to the north of the kist.

There are some of the ringstones still left" (SX 61741147).

A few yards south by west is a sub-circle of small stones about
24 yards diameter. From its southern end "an intermittent line of
stones" curves round the hilltop and ends near the cist west of the
highest point (SX 67 SW 3). (1)

I was unable to locate this feature. The position shown on the 6" field sheet is taken from Mr Prowse's map in (1). Within a radius of 50m of this point are a number of stones dotted above the turf in small groups, none of which, however, agree with his specifications in regard to size or relative position. No trace of a cairn circle was found. (2)

At the position indicated by Prowse there is a flat topped and
roughly triangular stone measuring at its greatest 1.6m. by 1.1m.
The underside is partly buried but is at least 0.5m. thick and
curvilinear, almost boat-shaped, in section. Beside this stone, on
the north-east is a recumbent slab 0.8m. by 0.6m., and two more,
0.9m. by 0.5m. lie on the south-east side.

Immediately to the west of the large stone two edge slabs protrude
from the surface both 0.7m. long. They are not parallel, being 0.6m.
apart at one end and 0.8m apart at the other. The measurements do
not conform to those of Prowse but nothing else can be seen in the
vicinity. It is most unlikely that these stones represent the
remains of a cist, but are a natural occurrence.

Nearby, as on Prowse's plan, there is a curvilinear bank of stones,
of which a few large ones protrude the surface at intervals of
2.0m. to 4.0m., and from 0.1m. to 0.3m. in height. There is no
circle, but the line extends to the northeast for about 20.0m. and
to the northwest for 60.0m. It cannot now be seen to join the row
of stones to the west (SX 67 SW 3) and like those, it is not a stone
row but the emergent part of a prehistoric field boundary.

No survey action taken in regard to the alleged cist and row. (3)

The plan position of the cist depicted on the TDA plan is very approximately at SX 61157448. No significant features were identified in this area on a NE-facing hillslope, covered by scattered earthfast boulders and stones.

The feature identified by Quinnell in 1980 at SX 61127442 is as described and as suggested, it is almost certainly not a cist. (4)
