Monument Number 443247

Hob Uid: 443247
Location :
Devon
West Devon
Dartmoor Forest
Grid Ref : SX6123074390
Summary : Pillow mound, previously thought to be a barrow
More information : A small mound, the nature of which is doubtful, though probably it is a tumulus, for an inermittent line of stones passes from it down the hill NE towards the West Dart (SX 61217439). (1)

A small oval mound which is 6.5m long, 4.5m wide, and 0.5m high. There are traces of a surrounding ditch 1.0m wide and 0.25m deep. The mound is completely turf-covered and in fairly good condition.

Position correct as shown on 6" field sheet.

I found no trace of a line of stones much as the one mentioned by Prowse. (2)

(SX 61237439) Tumulus (NR) (3)

Ditched mound believed pillow mound, 18th/19th century. Diameters
8m and 5m, height 0.3m. (4)

This is not a barrow but a pillow mound measuring 7.0m. by 4.5m.
and 0.8m. high. It is ditched with its main axis aligned with the
slope.

Surveyed at 1:10 000 and at 1:2500 for AO Records. (5)

Barrow. (6)

This pillow mound, situated on a steep east-facing slope, is fairly well preserved. The earthen mound, which measures 7.2m by 4.7m and 0.8m high is superficially disturbed on the top and has a few boulders protruding from its base on the downhill side. The silted ditch is, at maximum, 0.4m deep.

See SX 67 SW 98 for details of the 'line of stones' (1) depicted on the TDA plan. (7)
