Long Stone

Hob Uid: 443595
Location :
Devon
West Devon
Chagford, Dartmoor Forest, Gidleigh
Grid Ref : SX6602085670
Summary : A stone marking the boundary of three parishes. It was referred to as the "Langstone" in a documentary source of 1240. It is fairly well preserved despite an erosion hollow. Its proximity to a Bronze Age stone row has led to assertions that it may be of a contemporary date. Scheduled.
More information : (SX 66028567) Long Stone (NR). (BS) (NAT). (1)

The Long Stone stands in the middle of two stone rows ('E' and
'7F' SX 68 NE 16) and marks the boundary of the three parishes
of Chagford, Gidleigh and Lydford. It was referred to as the
Langstone in the Perambulation of the Forest of Dartmoor in
1240 AD. It stands 10 feet 5 inches high and the base
measurements are N 35 1/2 inches, E 24 inches, S 33 inches
and W 21 inches. (2)

Long Stone is as described; it now has a considerable lean to
the NE. A very strong similarity exists between this stone and the
fallen end stone (also utilised as a parish boundary mark) of
stone row (SX 16 NE/16 'B').
Published 1:2500 survey correct. (3)

As described. Long Stone now has a large erosion hollow on the N side. It is situated within a partly robbed stone row SX 68 NE 16 E-F and evidently served as a focal point for that row. (see RCHME survey of `The Shovel Down Stone Row` (part 1) at 1:200 scale). (4)
