(SX 658859) Hut Circles (NR). (2)

Within an area of two hectares are two single-walled and three
double-walled hut circles from 5.0m to 8.0m internal diameter
and with walling averaging 0.5m high. Where visible the
entrances are in the SE. The huts are either near or integrated
within a field wall or the corner of a field. Each appears to
have its own plot and the group seems to form a unit.

Surveyed at 1:2500, and centred at SX 65738595. (3)

Centred SX 65808595. Four well preserved hut circles, a possible fifth and a small rectangular structure lie within an irregular cluster of fields on the flat crest of Shovel Down. The area is under low heather and grass with a large expanse of former peat cuttings to the SW and N.
The huts are all slightly ovoid with internal diameters ranging from 4.4m to 7.1m (see accompanying tabulation). Two, 2 and 4 possess entrances in their SE quadrants. The possible hut 5 is situated on a slight slope remains intact, the arc of which suggests that it either formed a large hut or small pound. The rectangular feature 6 lies in a corner of one of the fields. There is no trace of any facing stones in its walls; neither entrance nor internal features are visible.
Both huts and fields lie within the Shovel Down parallel reave system (SX 68 NW 24). The irregular field plan is suggestive of an earlier origin to that of the reave system. Occupation apparently continued into the reave period as demonstrated by the long straight walls linking this settlement to the larger system.
A cairn (SX 68 NE 111) lies outside the area of fields slightly S of the main cluster.

A further table of information on the hut circles is held in the archive. (4)
