More information : (Centred SX 66838401) Hut Circles (NR). (1) Excavation of three circles in 1936, prior to the construction of new reservoir at Fernworthy, showed the eastern circle, "No 6" (SX 66858402), to represent the remains of a cairn with a probable cremation burial in a pit beneath a cover-stone. Circle "No 4" (at SX 6682 8402) was hut-circle of 24 1/2 feet internal diameter. Bronze Age pottery, flint chips and two pot-boilers were found on the floor, and secondary occupation by tinners was indicated by some tin slag and broken earthenware probably of the Tudor period. Circle "No 5" (SX 6682 8400), a hut-circle of about 25 feet dia., was not excavated. (2) All these features are now below the water-line of Fernworthy Reservoir. (3)
Centred SX 66838402. Three hut circles normally below the surface of Fernworthy Reservoir were exposed during the summer of 1995. All huts (tabulated below) are well-built utilising large upright slabs and blocks up to 1.1m high and possess entrances in the S or SE quadrants. Several lengths of later boulder walling containing some drill-split stones were exposed adjacent to the huts.
All diameters are internal, measurements are in metres.
