Russell refers to Hameldon Beacon as a fire beacon and shows it on his map as pre-Elizabethan. The only reference he quotes, however, is O.S. map of 1809. The place name 'Hamel Down' merely signifies a hill with a flat top (c). (2)

A grass covered cairn 18.0m. in diameter and 2.3m. high, surmounted by a boundary stone inscribed 'Hamilton Beacon'.

Apart from its suitable situation there is no visible evidence of its use as a beacon.

A 25" survey has been made. (3)
