Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 445614

Hob Uid: 445614
Location :
Devon
Teignbridge
Moretonhampstead
Grid Ref : SX7800084000
Summary : Cairn (site)
More information : A cairn "nine landyards around" (b), formerly at
Moor Barton, Moreton, was destroyed about 1839 (3) during
agricultural improvements. The cairn covered a cist composed of
six flat stones. Within the cist were burnt bones and ashes
(a & b,) a bronze spearhead with two rivets (a&b) thought by Fox
to have been a Wessex-type rivetted dagger, "one or two blue
and white beads" (a) (recorded by Shortt as "a glass British
bead") and a "small amulet of soft stone" (b). The finds were
loaned by Mr Wills, tenant farmer, to Rev Carrington, vicar of
Bridford. Moor Barton is located "near the valley on the south
west side" the plat (place) may be called 'Tentfield'. (a) at
the head of the Trenchford valley (SX 7884) (1) and this
location is confirmed by Moor Barton's contextual position in
Rowe's itinerary.

Moor Barton is sited at SX 785846 on OS 6" 1963, but on OS 1"
1809 there is a Moor Farm sited at SX 780839 ('Lewdons Farm' on
OS 6" 1963). (1-3)

Enquiries were made at Pepperdon, Moor Barton being derelict,
but neither the site of the cairn nor the place "Tentfield" were
known. The title map of 1838 at Morton Hampstead Rectory does
not mark this name. Perambulation of the area failed to locate
any vestige of a cairn in the vicinity. (4)

The cairn stood in Tent Field, now in watershead of Torquay Waterworks. (5,6)
