More information : (SX 70099078) Spinsters' Rock (NAT). Burial Chamber (NR). (1) The remains of a late Neolithic megalithic chamber tomb are situated on Shilstone Farm west of Drewsteignton. The remains of the chamber consist of three granite orthostats 6 to 9 1/2 feet high which support a large capstone 14 1/2 feet long by 10 feet wide. No trace of any mound survives. It collapsed in 1862 but was re-erected; no finds were recorded. It is associated with the nearby stones thought to have been circles and alignments (SX 69 SE 25). (2) This monument is in a good state of preservation. See ground-photograph. (3) Worth refers to Omerod (a) in that "the supporters are not now in their original position" after the 1862 restoration. This reference is incorrect as Omerod does not appear in that volume, though undoubtedly the article appeared elsewhere. (4) Spinsters Rock (name confirmed) (a) is as described above with the orthostats rising to between 1.7m. and 2.3m. and surmounted by a capstone 4.5m. by 3.1m. (See Ground Photograph and plan). Many of the trig stones are now exposed in the ploughed field as is the rock outcrop on the western side. Surveyed at 1:50 and, 1:2500 on M.S.D. (5)
