Monument Number 446821

Hob Uid: 446821
Location :
Devon
Teignbridge
Bovey Tracey
Grid Ref : SX8058078570
Summary : Site of a 14th century fortified manor house, surviving traces of which are visible as cropmarks in the lawn of the present house in dry weather.
More information : [SX 80587857]. Park House, the Manor proper of Bovey. An ancient & demi-castellated building of great strength & well-proportioned, built during the 14thc. was taken down by the father of its present proprietor, Mr. W.R. HOLE, between 55 & 60 years ago. It was here that the Royalist officers were surprised by the Roundheads just before the Heathfield Battle in 1646. [Devon 101 SW 5]. (1)

Believed to have stood where the present house stands; but in dry weather, when the lawn is cut, 'markings' can be made out, & masonry can be probed beneath. The front of the old house itself was probably where there is now the drive. (2)

Nothing remains today of the 14thc. castellated house.

No action was taken to confirm Major Hole's probing of his lawn. The present house is accepted as being within 10m. of the site of the original. (3)
