More information : No 40 (The Dutch House) The Strand (East Side) (SX 96808750 sited from OS 1:2500 1968) is a late 17th century stuccoed building of two storeys and attics. The end to the road has a Dutch parapet, probably original, and a large two storey late Georgian bow. On the long front are two original 17th century mullioned and transomed windows with leaded lights. (1) No 40, The Strand (a), is as described above. (See ground photographs). Although it simply bears a street number it is widely known as "The Dutch House". In good condition. (2) 1092 The Strand (East Side) TOPSHAM No 40 (The Dutch House) including the garage (Formerly listed in the rural district of St Thomas) SX 9688 9/1186 11.11.52 II* GV 2. Late C17. Stuccoed. Two storeys and attics. One of the best of the Dutch houses. End to road has Dutch parapet, probably original, and large 2 storey late Georgian bow. Rusticated quoins. Attic sash window in gable. On long front are two original C17 mullioned and transomed windows with leaded lights. These indicate the type of window originally used in all the late C17 merchant's houses. "Cottage" has been converted into Garage with recent curly gable. All the listed buildings of the Strand form a group. Wall and Piers of No 40 SX 9688 9/1186A II* GV 2. c18.
