Church Living And Church Living Cottage

Hob Uid: 448896
Location :
Devon
East Devon
Branscombe
Grid Ref : SY1958108852
Summary : Possibly originally a Medieval priest's house, now a farmhouse. Traditionally the place has been associated with the nearby Church of St Winifred but it was never a vicarage. It has been suggested that it was a summer residence of the Canons of Exeter Cathedral. It is essentially late 15th-early 16th century but parts are earlier, maybe as early as the 13th century; major later 16th and 17th century improvements; the main block was refurbished with a stable block extension in the late 19th century, and the crosswing was refurbished circa 1970. Mostly local Salcombe stone rubble but there are sections, particularly in the crosswing of coursed blocks of ashlar.
More information : (SY 18578852) Church Living (NR) (1)

Living House, opposite the church in Branscombe, 16th century and earlier. Its purpose is not satisfactorily explained though Mr J C Cox says it was a summer residence for Exeter Canons. (2)

Church Living is a much restored 16th century building of colour-washed rubble. It is L-shaped in plan with wings to south and east and is of two storeys and thatched. The south wing has an old two light mullioned window. This house, now a farmhouse, is reputed to have been the rectory or priest's house, to have a large hearth, and to be connected to the church by an underground passage. (3)

Name confirmed as Church Living, though the west end is Church Living Cottage, a seperate dwelling. (4)

Church Living and Church Living Cottage. Essentially C15th-early C16th, but parts are earlier, perhaps as early as the C13th. Grade II*. (5-6)
