Mermaid Hotel

Hob Uid: 419335
Location :
East Sussex
Rother
Rye
Grid Ref : TQ9201020290
Summary : Picturesque and popular inn. Purpose built as a high class hostelry, the building is essentially a rebuild circa 1530 of an earlier structure of which few traces remain. In circa 1570 the kitchen was reconstructed together with the first floor chamber within the western range, and about ten years later a parlour range was added, completing the courtyard. Due to the towns decline no subsequent major alterations were made. In the 18th and 19th centuries the building was divided into cottages before resuming its former function. Beneath the inn is a 13th to early 15th century barrel vaulted wine cellar. To the east is an 18th century red brick building also occupied as part of the hotel.

The Mermaid Hotel is a picturesque and popular hotel situated on a large plot in Mermaid Street. The original building was purpose built as a high class inn and is essentially a late 15th or early 16th century rebuild of an earlier structure of which few traces remain. In the mid 16th century the building was considerably extended and remodelled in two phases. Beneath the inn is a low 13th to early 15th century barrel vaulted wine cellar. (2)

A late C15 timber-framed building containing an inner courtyard.
There is a C13 stone vaulted cellar beneath the Hotel. The earliest
portion above ground is the south front. 2 storeys and attic. 5
windows. The 1st floor is studded and overhangs on the projecting
ends of the floor joists and bressumer. The westernmost bay of the
1st floor is built out over the entrance to the stable yard and
rests on 3 wooden posts with 3 beams across them and curved brackets
adjoining them. Beyond this yard the Hotel is continued into another
building containing 2 windows and 1 dormer. (The north front of
this portion of the hotel has been refaced with brick, though
the upright beams and curved braces have been preserved.)

Most of the windows of the Hotel are modern. Tiled roof. Doorway with
carved jambs. On the east front of the entrance to the stable yard
the infilling of the ground floor is of brick instead of plaster.
The 1st floor of the building overhangs on all fronts. There is
a gable at the east end of the north front. The interior contains
Tudor fireplaces and panelling. To the east the Hotel is continued
into an C18 red brick building of 2 storeys and attic, 2 windows and
2 dormers.
