Summary : Picturesque and popular inn. Purpose built as a high class hostelry, the building is essentially a rebuild circa 1530 of an earlier structure of which few traces remain. In circa 1570 the kitchen was reconstructed together with the first floor chamber within the western range, and about ten years later a parlour range was added, completing the courtyard. Due to the towns decline no subsequent major alterations were made. In the 18th and 19th centuries the building was divided into cottages before resuming its former function. Beneath the inn is a 13th to early 15th century barrel vaulted wine cellar. To the east is an 18th century red brick building also occupied as part of the hotel. |
