Colway Manor House

Hob Uid: 449792
Location :
Dorset
Lyme Regis
Grid Ref : SY3375609300
Summary : Rebuilt 1912, C17th entrance & barn. Mentioned in Domesday
More information : (SY 33769299) Colway Manor House (NR) (Remains of) (NAT) (1)

Colway Manor House was entirely rebuilt 1921 but incorporates
the early 17th century stone entrance to the former house. A
barn north of the house is of 17th century origin. (2)

Known as Colway Manor according to an inscription on the gate.
The exterior appears to be completely modern apart from stone
entrance referred to above, and it could not be ascertained if
the present house is built upon the site of the former manor
house. The barn, at SY 33769302, has walls of stone and cob,
and an apparently original timber-framed roof. (3)

`Coleheoh' (Colway) assessed as a 3-hide estate held by Glastonbury
in 1086 with associated saltworkings. `It is tempting to see the
four Lyme estates, of which Colway was one, as subdivisions of one
large salt-producing Roman estate, represented by the villa at
Holcombe'. (SY 39 SW 2). Description of the hercology of Lyme. (4)
