Summary : Two Post Medieval pillow mounds, visible as earthwork banks and ditches, were mapped from aerial photographs taken in 1946. Located on the Iron Age promontory hillfort (ST 37 SE 1) on Wain's Hill, the pillow mounds, centred at ST 3904 7062, consists of two elongated earthwork banks, aligned WNW-ESE, between which is a ditch about 2.5 to 3 metres wide. The two pillow mounds are associated with a further pillow mound about 65 metres to the ESE (ST 37 SE 41 ). Shown on the 1st edition of the 1:2500 scale OS map dated 1884-1885, the southerly mound of the pair is an elongated, cigar-shaped earthwork mound about 37 metres long and 4.5 metres wide. About halfway along the pillow mound on its northern edge, an irregular shaped notch appears to represent an attempt to cut into the feature. The northern pillow mound is a curvilinear strip about 45 metres long and about 1.5 to 2.5 metres wide. The pillow mounds are still visible in aerial photographs taken in 1985.
