More information : [SD 87212709] BEACON [GS] (Remains of) (1) The beacon-remains ... on Thiereby Pike is quite distinct, and is a complete circle in the form of a basin, the circumference round the centre of the embankment being about 80 ft; many of the stones within the ring, and in the immediate vicinity, bear evident marks of having been scorched or charred by fire. (2) At the point indicated on the 6" sheet, an irregular, shallow depression is still visible. (3) [SD 87172712] Re-surveyed at 1:2500 (4)
Site of beacon consists of a much disturbed broad mound about 1.4 metres high, with hollowed top. On summit of Thieveley Pike which affords wide views over surrounding countryside. Typical position for an upland round barrow and it is likely that an earlier barrow was used for the site of the beacon; there are now no obvious surviving traces of the latter. An Ordnance Survey trig station has been built on the southwest edge of the mound. Central hollow and trig station shown on 1893 map (surveyed 1891) and western side of mound plus trig station depicted on the edition of 1911 (Lancashire revised 1909). Probably changed little, if at all, in 20th century. (5-8) |
