Monument Number 45211

Hob Uid: 45211
Location :
Lancashire
Burnley
Cliviger
Grid Ref : SD8717027120
Summary : Site of a possible round barrow and a Medieval or later beacon on Thieveley Pike. The site was described in 1868 as comprising a basin, 80 feet in circumference, with many of the stones within the ring or immediate locality as being scorched by fire. Field investigations in 2003 found the beacon to comprise a much disturbed mound, 1.4 metres high, with a hollowed top. An Ordnance Survey trig station had been built on the southwest edge. Due to its location it has been also interpreted as the site of a possible upland round barrow later reused as a beacon.
More information : [SD 87212709] BEACON [GS] (Remains of) (1)

The beacon-remains ... on Thiereby Pike is quite distinct, and is a complete circle in the form of a basin, the circumference round the centre of the embankment being about 80 ft; many of the stones within the ring, and in the immediate vicinity, bear evident marks of having been scorched or charred by fire. (2)

At the point indicated on the 6" sheet, an irregular, shallow
depression is still visible. (3)

[SD 87172712] Re-surveyed at 1:2500 (4)

Site of beacon consists of a much disturbed broad mound about 1.4 metres high, with hollowed top. On summit of Thieveley Pike which affords wide views over surrounding countryside. Typical position for an upland round barrow and it is likely that an earlier barrow was used for the site of the beacon; there are now no obvious surviving traces of the latter. An Ordnance Survey trig station has been built on the southwest edge of the mound.
Central hollow and trig station shown on 1893 map (surveyed 1891) and western side of mound plus trig station depicted on the edition of 1911 (Lancashire revised 1909).
Probably changed little, if at all, in 20th century. (5-8)
