Monument Number 45530

Hob Uid: 45530
Location :
North Yorkshire
Craven
Hellifield
Grid Ref : SD8620054400
Summary : Site of an undated rectangular enclosure, an alleged Roman camp; no longer visible.
More information : [SD 862544] A rectangular enclosure, about 150 yds N-S by 90 yds E - W formed by a rampart of earth and stones, and surrounded by a ditch. Situated in the grounds between Swinden Hall and the railway, and considered to be a Roman Camp. Sited from plan. (1)

There are now no identifiable remains of any enclosure at the indicated position. The former existence of a Ro camp, however is extremely doubtful, as Gregory's contention is used to support a system of spurious Ro Roads, extending from Swinden Hall, for which there are no corroborating ground evidence.
