More information : In one of the meadows near Hilltop is a large and well defined ring mound, 15 yards in diameter and 1'6" high. Pieces of charcoal and fragments of burnt stone were found during excavation. (1) SD 9801 0745. A ditchless earthen mound, 0.5m. high, answers the siting description above, but appears to be the remains of a denuded and mutilated round barrow. It is not a ring mound. Surveyed at 1:2500. (2)
SD 9800 0744. Bowl barrow 190m NNE of Knarr Barn. Scheduled RSM No. 23758. The barrow survives as a slightly oval earthen mound up to 0.5m high with maximum dimensions of 18m by 17m. Further limited excavation was undertaken in the 1980s when only the topsoil of a single trench was removed. No finds were recorded. Despite excavations the barrow survives reasonably well. (3) |
