Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 45916

Hob Uid: 45916
Location :
Oldham
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : SD9130006600
Summary : The remains of a Roman or Medieval bloomery with slag heaps was recorded in 1836 and was still visible circa 1883 at Plumpton Clough, in the parish of Royton.
More information : The remains of an iron forge, surrounded by heaps of
scoriae recorded 1836 and some still visible circa 1883 at
Plumpton Clough, in the parish of Royton. Their Roman origin is
hardly doubtful. (1)

There are now no visible indications of the forge. Plumpton
Clough, centred at SD 913066, is mainly playing fields. The
siting, however, suggests that this was a medieval bloomery. (2)
