Hanging Stone

Summary : A medieval standing cross known as Hanging Stone or Watersheddles Cross. It is located on open moorland north east of Watersheddles Reservoir and consists of a rough block of millstone grit which now rests against an outcrop of bedrock at an angle of 50 to 60 degrees. It measures 1.82m long and is of rectangular cross section measuring 0.6m by 0.4m. On the west face of the cross the inscription HANGING STONE OR WATERSHEDDLES CROSS was carved during the 19th century. `Waterschedles crosse' is mentioned in a medieval document dated 1327-77 during the period when it functioned as one of the boundary stones marking the division between the diocese of York and the diocese of Lichfield.

Waterschedles Cross. -"The cross is...near the high road,
which runs in an easterly direction from Colne, through
Wycoller....Near it is the forked stream.....forming one of the
feeders of the river Aire...... the remains consist of a
rough block of stone, leaning at an angle of about forty-five
degrees against a projecting rock. The top end has been shaped
into the form of an octagon, on the face of which a raised
cross is to be seen. The stone is about six feet long and two
feet wide, tapering to eleven inches square at the upper end,
and appears to once have stood upright. Some local authorities have
cut on it the words 'Hanging Stone or Waterscheddles Cross'." (2)

No 23747. A medieval standing cross consisting of a rough block of
