Sandown Pier was built in 1878 to a length of 360 feet
(109.7 metres) and was extended in 1895 to its present length of 875 feet (266.7 metres). The original iron piles have been
extensively replaced by re-inforced concrete piles and much of the girderwork and deck has been renewed. The pavilion was built in 1934 and a new complex with a theatre, bars and shops was opened in 1973. A new concrete landing stage protects the head. (2)
