Summary : Site of ap pleasure pier built in 1891, partially rebuilt in 1927 and otherwise altered in the later 20th century. It is of cast iron construction with slender columns in groups of four with wooden boarding and pavilions. The 1200 ft long pier has a boarded promanade with iron railings and a landing stage at the far end. The entrance to the pier is flanked by octagonal wooden lodges with deep eaved pyramidal roofs. The central two storey wooden pavilion replaced an earlier pavilion in 1927. The pier was severely damaged by the 1987 hurricane. |
More information : SZ 586814 Pier. (1) Shanklin Pier was built for the Shanklin Pier Co.in 1891 with a length of 1200 feet (365.8 metres). It consists of a girder framework on cast iron columns and much of it appears to be original. The concert pavilion was rebuilt after a fire in 1927 and there is a variety of other amusement facilities. (2) THE ESPLANADE II Shanklin Pier Built in 1891. Cast iron construction with slender tracing. 1200 ft long. Boarded promenade with landing stage at far end. Entrance to pier flanked by octagonal wood lodges with deep caved pyramidal roofs. Central pavilion with raised enclosed galleries to sides. Barred vaulted tarred roof with canted domed ends. Small central lantern. End pavilion over landing stage with tent shaped roof and octagonal kiosks adjoining each end. Picturesque.
