More information : SD 9904 5185. Medieval borough of Skipton. The growth of the town stemmed from the granting of a major Fee (Honour of Skipton) to the Romille family in 1066, and then to the Cliffords from 1309. The principal feature of the town are the castle, with 11th century fragments but mainly early 14th-15th century, (see SD 95 SE/6) and the parish church, 14th-15th century (see SD 95 SE/2). (1)
The medieval town grew around the market which is mentioned in the 12th century and was well established by 1311. (2)
